The historical Buddha, Siddhārtha Gautama, is an influential thought leader who changed the world.

For more than 40 years of his lifetime, he served people by teaching a nonsectarian (i.e. non-religious, non-dogmatic) way to live a more harmonious life… where happiness comes from the inside and doesn’t depend on what’s happening outside of us.

He discovered a practice that worked for him, worked for other people, and could be taught.

As a result, his message, teaching, and how he delivered them — have created an ongoing legacy (almost 2,600 years already) — and make him one of the most influential thought leaders in human history.

Here are 7 reasons why:

  1. The Buddha tailored his vision, message, and teaching to his audience. No matter who he was talking to — woman or man, queen, king, or peasant — he always spoke to people in a language that they understood. He met them where they were, not where they “should” be.
  2. He used story and analogy to clarify his point, to provide a learning experience that was much more holistic than straight theory, and much more memorable over time. He taught in a way was accessible, was applicable in daily life, and gave immediate as well as long-term benefits and results.
  3. The Buddha always invited people to try his system out… to verify the results for themselves, and not just accept them on blind faith.
  4. He presented his teachings simply and directly: as frameworks, steps, and a clear process. He made sure that his teaching was available to everyone who wanted to listen and practice.
  5. He created an aligned mission, vision, principles, method, and message that became his brand. This was the foundation for a growing community that practiced the teachings and spread them to others.
  6. He knew that the only way to keep the teachings intact and available for generations to come, was to deliver them in a variety of ways: different methods, diverse perspectives, various analogies, and multiple angles. (Yet, always following the same core, guiding principles.)
  7. The Buddha taught that the only constant, is change. This means that each of us has an opportunity every single moment to change: what we think, say, and do — so we can break free from the places we’re stuck — and live happier, more peaceful, more successful lives.

The historical Buddha, Siddhārtha Gautama, is an influential thought leader who changed the world.

If you’re still reading this I have a sneaking suspicion that you’re someone who’s changing the world, too. Thanks for doing that!

May the wisdom, guidance, and love of great teachers always find their way to all of us… so we can create the changes we want to see.
